Moulding Lives Through Value-Embeded Learning

About Jesuits

Education is central to the Jesuit apostolate and its reason may be found in the life and message of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus.

Since its founding by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, the Society of Jesus, a Christian religious order, has been involved in the field of education all over the world. At the time of the founder’s death, about 1000 Jesuits were working in Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Portugal, Brazil, and India. At present, the Jesuits are in charge of 3,897 educational institutions across 96 nations. These Jesuit educational institutions employ over 1,34,303 teachers who work with about 2.9 million students across the globe.

The establishment of schools and colleges in Goa and Cochin by St. Francis Xavier on May 6, 1542, marks the beginning of the Jesuits' educational mission in India. His memory has served as an inspiration for several prestigious institutions in India. The Society of Jesus educated 3,60,000 pupils from every social class, community, and language group in 118 primary and middle schools, 149 high schools, 58 university colleges, 22 technical institutes, and 16 business administration institutes in India. These institutions employ 11,525 teachers. These institutions are a part of the Catholic Church's initiative to contribute to the national educational project. The Jesuit institutions seek to form young people holistically and personally.
